If you noticed that the day the big update patch was put in, there was a lot of problems flying a mount. They fixed the exploit but broke flying. To get your mount to fly you had to enter combat or chunk and even then it was iffy. The next hotpatch that went in fixed both. From all my tests this is no longer possible to exploit.

The other way to do it not mentioned here was to hover over an aggro mob that was attacking you and wait until your timer went down to zero then fly off.
